Pedestrian ban signs to be installed

signs banning pedestrians from walking along the West Approach Road are to be put up after the Evening News raised the issue with city transport boss Councillor Lesley Hinds.

In a recent interview where readers’ questions were put to Cllr Hinds, she was asked why there was nothing to warn people of the danger of walking along the edge of the busy road – even though it is illegal to walk or cycle along it under traffic regulations.

Now at the Morrison Link, just past the pedestrian crossing, a planter will be installed with an eye-level sign informing people there is no foot access beyond that point, while on the West Approach Road, a sign will be installed on the guard rail. Letters will be sent to the Sheraton Hotel asking it to reinforce this with guests.

A council spokesman said: “While these things won’t deter everyone from walking illegally along the road, it will hopefully stop most pedestrians from doing so.”
