‘PC’ Christmas cards under fire

Calls to return to a more traditional message to official Christmas cards sent out by the city council have been referred to the authority’s finance committee.

Tory councillor Jeremy Balfour had urged officials to ensure the card contains the traditional sentiment of “Merry Christmas” in future years, rather than the message of “Season’s Greetings” contained within this year’s batch of 2500 cards.

He had lodged a motion for last week’s meeting of the full council instructing chief executive Sue Bruce to ensure that there is an option of having “Merry Christmas” as the message in 2012.

But Lord Provost George Grubb opted instead to refer the motion to the next finance and resources committee, on January 17.

Cllr Balfour believes that the word Christmas should not be removed from a Christian festival and claims that the change is another sign of “political correctness gone mad”.
