‘Pause’ time move to end prayers row

COUNCIL meetings are to begin with a new “Pause for Reflection” in a bid to represent all faiths, beliefs and civic interests fairly.

Lord Provost Donald Wilson has announced the measure, saying it will “clearly give a voice to the broadest possible spectrum of faith, community and civic interests from among Edinburgh’s residents and organisations”.

It follows a row earlier this year after the National Secular Society (NSS) targeted Edinburgh for being one of the only Scottish councils to still hold prayers before its monthly meetings of all councillors.

Council officials had recommended halting the prayers, but it is now hoped this new measure will be an acceptable compromise, allowing different groups – religious and non-religious – to take part.
