Party leaders full of seasonal praise for public services

THE front-line public services have been praised in the festive messages of the leaders of three of Scotland's main political parties.

Annabel Goldie, leader of Scottish Conservative Party, said: "Christmas is a time when we naturally group together but we must remember those who carry on working to care for others and to keep us safe. And let's also spare a thought for those who don't have the comfort of family and friends and let us all be good neighbours this Christmas."

Iain Gray, leader of the Scottish Labour Party, said: "I would like to pay a special tribute to the unsung heroes who will be running essential services for the public over Christmas. Council staff and transport workers also deserve a special mention for their efforts to keep the country moving despite extreme weather conditions."

This was a sentiment echoed by Tavish Scott, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, who praised the public spirt on display throughout Scotland during the severe weather.

He said: "At Christmas, I want to recognise all those Scots who've worked so hard to help people in need through those wintery months. They are the unsung champions across Scotland and deserve our support. I also want to recognise Scottish servicemen in Afghanistan and in other countries. Our thoughts are with them and their families back home at Christmas time."

Alex Salmond, the First Minister, will release a statement today.
