Pandas get their own Chinese takeaway

THEY may only have been in Scotland for a few weeks, but already giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian are indulging in the local cuisine – with their first takeaway.

Yang Guang was today set to receive a “delivery for one” from the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church, which was sending round a van loaded up with bamboo for his lunch.

The church on Nicolson Square is one of the zoo’s contingency network of suppliers whose bamboo has been stringently assessed. When the zoo recently found out the church had to cut down its bamboo plant due to an imminent expansion, it was delighted to accept the bamboo.

Rab Harden, gardens team leader for Edinburgh Zoo, said: “Although absolutely no problems exists with the pandas’ regular bamboo source, it seemed a shame to let great quality bamboo go to waste.”
