Bruce D Skivington (Letters, 17 January) makes a very relevant comment about the population sizes of both Sweden and the Irish Free State in comparison to Scotland in the ongoing independence debate.

However, when those two countries gained their independence around 100 years ago most of their people lived outside cities, and, of critical importance in this ongoing debate, had all of the attributes that distinctive lifestyle required.
