Poverty pledge doesn’t ring true

THE news that the new First Minster of the Scottish Parliament intends to make tackling poverty her first order of business (News, 16 November) is extremely heartening, but rather incongruous as well.

We should not forget that this is a woman who has never ever known hardship or poverty in her life and whose taxpayer-funded salary (plus expenses) will be well in excess of £130K and prior to this was around £100K (plus, of course, the expenses).

How can Ms Sturgeon have any idea what real poverty means? How can she possibly truly empathise with those genuinely desperate people who actually rely on handouts from food banks and government to survive, rather than heavily subsidised meals in the Holyrood dining room?
