Navy all at sea

Have your say

Alex Orr (Letters, 17 April)
berates the UK for having to send gunboats from the south to shadow Russian naval forces because no suitable vessels were based in Scotland, thus highlighting the downsizing of the UK’s fleet.

To rectify this, breaking away is thought to enable us to defend ourselves adequately with our own armed forces, for example by acquiring our own warships.

Having our own Scotland-based navy could then no doubt let us see off the Russians and any others who enter our territorial waters uninvited.

Unfortunately, even the suggested co-operation with rUK’s shrunken navy would surely make no difference to, say, Russian indifference.
