If the Scottish and UK governments believe that increasing the unit price of alcohol will reduce consumption, ministers should watch Billy Wilder’s 1945 film The Lost Weekend, which shows the desperate life of an alcoholic during a four-day binge.

Making it more expensive will cause more problems, because when a man needs a drink, he will get a drink – regardless.
