I recently wondered why we hadn’t heard a lot of justice secretary Kenny MacAskill lately, then up he pops with the plan to reduce the drink driving limit to 50mg in every 100ml of blood “by Christmas”.
Not only will this cause confusion with the rest of the UK, but he hasn’t told us how many accidents were caused last year by those in the 50-80mg per 100ml bracket.
Surely the biggest problems are those who continually drink and drive well over the existing 80mg level.
Maybe he could discuss with us the mandatory prison sentence for those who are second and third-time offenders and how many people have avoided prison, despite being habitual offenders.
This move strikes me as a tool to massage the conviction rates for the police.
