Bridge budgets

On the BBC Scottish news on Sunday there were details of a proposal to build a bridge over the River Dee at Braemar to give walkers and cyclists easier access to the Cairngorms.

This is an excellent idea but it will cost more than £1 million.

The long distant walk from Blair Atholl to Braemar through Glen Tilt is one of the most popular cross-country routes in Scotland but poses a potential problem where the route crosses the River Geldie, 12 miles west of Braemar.

If the River Geldie is in spate, it is too dangerous to attempt a crossing. There used to be a bridge here, but it collapsed many years ago.

A footbridge over the Geldie at the site of the former bridge could be built at a fraction of the cost of the proposed bridge at Braemar.
