Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander yesterday warned that Scots could face a £5,000 hike in mortgage payments if Alex Salmond follows through on his threat for Scotland not to shoulder its share of the national debt.

Danny Alexander appeared before MSPs on Holyrood’s economy committee yesterday. They later heard from Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and finance secretary John Swinney as part of an inquiry into Scotland’s future after the referendum.
