Wrong on gongs

Ruth Marr (Letters, 21 June) seems to think that MBE means “Member of the British Empire” when it actually means “Member of the Order of the British Empire”, an honorary institution that no longer requires the existence of an empire, any more than the Victoria Cross implies the continuing reign of Queen Victoria.
