Woolly response

You ask "How did we cope" in 1963 (Features, 9 January)? I ask how did we cope in 1947, the year I particularly remember? How did we cope during the war, when I put chains on the wheels of my butcher's van to get supplies to our customers?

How did we keep warm? We were active; we didn't sit about moaning and waiting for a handout. I can hear my mother yet... "If you're cold, put on a jersey."
