Why Connolly?

The appointment of Billy Connolly as “ambassador” for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games, in 2014 (your report, 20 September), suggests that the politicians’ promises to end what is euphemistically referred to as “sectarianism” in the city are still some way off being fulfilled.

This alleged comic is on public record describing the Catholic Church as “primitive” and “frightening” and so, naturally, he admits to harbouring a “deep distrust and dislike” of it, accusing the Church of “brainwashing people”. That Billy Connolly is a lapsed Catholic is irrelevant. It doesn’t take much to stoke the fires of bigotry in Glasgow, and so this choice of “ambassador” is provocative, certainly to informed Catholics if not to those middle-of-the-road types who think his vulgar humour trumps his hatred of the faith.
