When in a hole…

Each time one of the many utility, communications or tram companies digs up another stretch of our city’s roads to lay their pipes or cables can we make them responsible for repairing four potholes in the immediate vicinity of their work when they come to fill and resurface?

They have the manpower, materials and machinery on site. They have inconvenienced the road users while the works have been in progress and it would be a visible, useful gesture to the locals in return for closing part of the road network.

It would be straightforward to spraypaint four holes for repair while the contractor was doing its own work and would save the council time and money doing the repairs itself.

The time spent doing this would be a fraction of the total spent by the contractor and would at least put them in a slightly better light to the long- suffering users of Edinburgh’s third world roads.

These companies make vast amounts of money from us and a little payback would help everyone in the city, including our cash-strapped council.
