What’s in a word?

Many thanks to Derrick 
McClure (Letters, 31 July) for responding to my earlier letter regarding the pronunciation of the Gaelic word cuach, meaning drinking cup, and thus making even more people aware of the origin of the word, even as he says it has been regarded as a Scots word since the 16th century.

At what point, I wonder, did people start getting it 
wrong both in spelling and 
pronunciation?

Unfortunately, neither of us will be around in the 26th century to debate the rights and wrongs of pronouncing loch as lock, whisky as wisky, and Lamont as La Mont, just because some Scottish announcers and commentators are doing so in the 21st century.
