Utilities scandal

After the harsh winter we have endured, an issue which should be at the heart of the election is fuel poverty and the utility companies.

I welcomed Radio Scotland's special report yesterday on switching utility suppliers. It highlighted these companies' practice of charging those on low incomes and those without bank accounts more, using white meters. It is exploitation.

Their reluctance to release customers' details to alternative suppliers is nothing short of arrogance.

Only utility customers who are in the privileged position of having the finances and a bank account are spared the most expensive tariff.

There are many people living in fuel poverty and political parties should be challenged to address this before the vulnerable need to endure another freezing winter.
