Useful training

I read with great interest Eddie Barnes’s article (10 May) about encouraging more pupils to consider a career in IT and engineering.

At ScotlandIS, we echo completely Dr Wilson’s thoughts that a shift in mind-set is needed from parents and pupils to look more closely at careers in the IT industry rather than traditional professions.

The IT industry, worth £4 billion to the Scottish economy, is a key driver for growth and one of the hidden jewels in the Scottish economy. However, the sector is facing a significant skills shortage and a dwindling talent pipeline from schools and universities. Over the next five years, more than 40,000 new entrants are required to fill IT and telecoms professional job roles in Scotland.

Ours is a vibrant industry, growing nine times faster than the Scottish average. The IT industry offers excellent salaries, flexible working, the chance to travel and the opportunity to work in a dynamic industry that is transforming the way we live.

Rather than embracing the traditional professions (where job opportunities are increasingly in limited supply), it’s vital that parents and students recognise the fantastic opportunities that lie within a sector with a very bright future.
