UK constitution

I was interested to read your leader, “SNP fallout hastens case for independent analysis” (25 October).

I chair the political and constitutional reform committee at the House of Commons, which is currently conducting an inquiry into whether we need a constitutional convention for the UK, which may be of interest in this context.

The focus of our analysis is on whether there should be a convention to consider the future of the Union as a whole rather than piecemeal through an emphasis on particular nations or issues.

The committee held a useful and interesting oral evidence session in Edinburgh on 4 October to explore some of the main questions with party leaders in Scotland. A record of the session can be found on the committee’s website.
