Tories in Scotland

Ian O Bayne (Letters, 26 May) asks how the electoral prospects of a Conservative Party in Scotland will be served if the British Government concedes very little to the demands of the nationalists.

The answer is pretty obvious. We are now entering a period in which an increasing proportion of the electorate in Scotland is concerned that more powers to an already powerful nationalist-dominated parliament will precipitate separation in short order.

This is, no doubt, what Mr Bayne is hoping for.

In such circumstances, a party in Scotland – perhaps the only one left – which will stand strongly for the maintenance of the Union and oppose the endless demands of the nationalists, will only find its star rising. It is hardly going to fall under such circumstances!
