Tied into Nato

GRAHAM Leicester (Opinion, 2 January) evokes a bygone age and it feels good. However, since Suez and, in particular, since Tony Blair sacked Robin Cook, we have had no foreign policy. We are part of the US bloc. An independent Scotland might be different but the decision to send a trade mission to Israel is not encouraging. Even if Scotland were to leave Nato and break up the British Army, can anyone believe other countries will seek us out and use our skills in the international arena?

Mr Leicester should have argued that a truly independent foreign policy is required first. Then perhaps the rest of the world will listen to us again.
