Stats the truth

Douglas Turner (Letters, 1 May) should do his homework before stating that 800,000 Scots living elsewhere in the United Kingdom is “a gross exaggeration”.

My figure of more than 830,000 came from the official General Register Office for Scotland Statistics. In fact, the exact figure is 835,738.

As for his suggestion that a significant amount of Yes Scotland’s money may have come from the 10 per cent of the Scottish population who are English, all I can say is that I have yet to encounter a single person among the 460,000 born elsewhere in the UK and now living in Scotland who supports independence.

Indeed, all those I know are steadfast in recognising the many benefits of remaining part of the Union.
