Speaking out

You report on a poll of 300 business executives showing that Scots accents are strongly associated with hard work, success and reliability (1 February). Only Indian and Asian accents scored ahead of Scots.

Isn’t it time Tesco and Asda acknowledge the value of the Scots accent in their self-service checkouts, escalators and taped announcements?

The sounds in my local supermarkets make me think I’m in Surrey. There’s no excuse for this in the days of the thousand ringtones and personalised satnavs.

Supermarkets should show respect for their Scottish customers with Scots accents in their technology – which, of course, they have already lovingly altered to take our Scots banknotes.
