Sort of progress

I am delighted that in 2015 the Speculative Society has deigned to accept women members (your report, 20 May).

It is worth noting that this announcement comes as the Spec’s relationship with the University of Edinburgh is under scrutiny, and excluding women is among the sticking points.

The pressure to justify the public subsidy of rooms in Old College remains, as does the white tie-wearing, self-appointing nature of the society.

In truth, a genuinely relevant and enlightened society would have admitted women years ago.

Regardless, any step towards equality, however belated, is to be welcomed, even if it is self-preservation dressed up as progress.
