A sight to behold

AS A regular visitor to Perth I think the local council has done much to improve the civic realm.

On my first visit in the 1970s I was amazed that its crowning architectural and historical glory, St John’s Kirk, was hidden behind the City Hall, whose style and bulk was over-powering.

The council has made attempts to find an alternative use for the hall but none has proved viable. As far as I can see those campaigning for its retention have not produced the funds for an alternative use.

A central square in Perth would greatly enhance St John’s Kirk’s position and allow everyone to feast on the sight of its west front.
