Sheridan saga

Tommy Sheridan must be a journalist’s dream: charismatic with always plenty to say.

However, he was convicted of a serious crime in a court of law by a jury of his peers, despite his vehement denials of guilt (your report, 31 January). He will obviously try to clear his name, but let him do so outwith the media spotlight, otherwise he may become a readers’ nightmare.

The circumstances of the case have already been thoroughly aired in the public domain and there are much more important issues to be highlighted.

The last thing in the world that Alex Salmond needed was for Tommy Sheridan, on his release from prison, to declare his intention to fight for Scottish independence, making the referendum an even more difficult battle for the SNP to win.

The Scottish electorate has really seen enough of the flamboyant displays over many years from Sheridan, and he has now blown any chance of returning to mainstream politics and should give it a well-deserved rest.
