Seeing the light

Alistair McBay, of the National Secular Scoiety, is wrong in claiming that we owe religious toleration solely to the Enlightenment of the 18th century (Letters, 14 March). Long before David Hume, the High Calvinist Roger Williams was demanding freedom – in Christ’s name – for “the most heathenish, Turkish and Jewish consciences”.

“Enlightenment” thinking also led humanity into ghastly reigns of terror under Robespierre and Pol Pot.
