Scotsman Archive: Grocers' Plea: "Abolish points scheme" 13 April, 1950

A plea for the abolition of the points scheme was made by the Scottish Federation of Grocers' and Provision Merchants' Association in Edinburgh yesterday. There was also a request that the domestic sugar ration should be increased to 12 ounces per week.

Mr D W Campbell, Glasgow, moved a resolution "that the points scheme has outlived its usefulness and should be abolished but that the unit voucher system should be continued". The federation discussed a resolution from the Glasgow Association that the domestic sugar ration should be increased. Mr Campbell said they must insist that the present ration of sugar was insufficient. The public definitely wanted more sugar; every customer complained of the lack of adequate supplies.

The Wholesale Grocers' Association of Scotland has written to the Ministry of Food requesting that an allocation of sultanas should be made to Scotland. Currants only are being allocated, whereas there is a substantial demand for sultanas.
