SCOTLAND AND DOMINIONS 15 January, 1949

IMPORTANT two-day talks have just been completed between Sir Steven Bilsland, Bt., and the Commercial Counsellor for Canada and the High Commissioners for Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, on improving two-way trade between these countries and Scotland. Further talks are to be initiated with a view to increasing trade between Scotland and other countries, including the United States. The dollar trade with Canada was one of the foremost questions raised during the present negotiations, while direct shipments to Scotland and tourism were also prominent subjects of discussion. Sir Steven conducted the talks on behalf of the Scottish Council (Development and Industry), and was accompanied by Mr MacNeill Weir, the representative of the London Committee of the Council. Sir Steven stated that the London Committee had been most active in its efforts to assist Scottish firms, especially smaller firms, to extend their attention to overseas buyers.
