PLAN TO ABOLISH ST ANDREWS COLLEGE SYSTEM, 29 April, 1950

The Right Rev Dr George S Duncan, Principal of St Mary's College, St Andrews, has forwarded to the Secretary of State for Scotland the proposal in the Cooper Report to abolish the collegiate system in the University of St Andrews. "Any attempt to give legislative sanction to the proposal for the abolition of the colleges," states Principal Duncan, "will open wide the floodgates of resentment and opposition. What an anomaly that such a proposal should fail to be considered in the very year that is to see the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the founding of the College of St Salvator! The anomaly in the case of the College of St Mary would appear scarcely less glaring when one recalls the contribution which this college has made during its 400 years to the history of Scotland and of the Scottish Church, or when one reflects on the place of influence and of honour which it has today among the theological colleges of the world."
