BUILDING RACE ON, SAYS MR SANDYS, 8 June, 1945

Servicemen at home and abroad, even in the front line in the Far East, and all men and women absent from home through business reasons will be able to apply for new houses and receive equal consideration with applicants on the spot. This plan was announced in the House of Commons last night by Mr Willink (Minister of Health) when he replied to a six hours housing debate, in which Scottish members took a prominent part. Forms of application will soon be distributed to the Services, and Local Authorities will be told to accept them as sufficient application for houses in their areas. Mr Duncan Sandys (Minister of Works) told the House that the post-war housing race had started. By autumn 100,000 sites should be ready for permanent houses, and within the next six months it should be possible to put in hand the whole 100,000 houses – the first year's complete programme.
