Scots pay price

Andrew Sugden, director of membership of the North East Chambers of Commerce, states that “independence (for Scotland) or the “remarkable consolidation of devo-max” represents “active economic competition for the region” (your report, 21 March).

In other words, he would rather Scotland (as well as the North-east) continues to be disadvantaged and run as a “branch economy” of the South-east.

After all, the former governor of the Bank of England, the late Eddie George, was honest enough to state in 1989 that job losses in the North were “a price worth paying to dampen inflation in the South”.
