I trust that the Scottish football chairmen will retain their recently acquired backbone and reject the paltry five-year deal with Sky which, if around £13 million a year, is way below market value when compared with Norway’s £42m a year for its league rights.

On average, Scottish games
attract around ten per cent of the English Premiership audience yet the sum on offer until 2018 is only 20 per cent of what Sky paid in England more than 20 years ago, and a mere pittance against the current £1 billion a year being paid out in England, and even less than the BBC’s subsidy of lower league football south of the Border.

At the very least, the Scottish chairmen should only sign up for two more years and investigate the possibility of an SPL TV based on the Dutch model or open it up to other potential bidders.

Supporter subscription power should be used as a lever to induce Sky, BBC or anyone else to bid a fair sum for what would become a much more attractive product.
