Salmond’s ego is a fatal weakness

SINCE coming to office the First Minister has effortlessly dominated First Minister’s Questions. Lately, however, the invincible bubble seems to be bursting. His arguments justifying his relationship with two rich and powerful men are, to say the least, unconvincing.

SINCE coming to office the First Minister has effortlessly dominated First Minister’s Questions. Lately, however, the invincible bubble seems to be bursting. His arguments justifying his relationship with two rich and powerful men are, to say the least, unconvincing.

Allegations of impropriety have been repeatedly and relentlessly raised by the opposition and even if no wrongdoing so far can be proved, recent sessions have amply illustrated what many have long suspected: Alex Salmond’s fatal weakness is his ego.

His penchant for the rich and powerful is palpably obvious. It is clear he exults simply being in the presence of royalty and other powerful figures, such as Rupert Murdoch and Donald Trump, and this may well in the end prove to be his undoing.

In the same way as Margaret Thatcher’s ego in the end brought her down – who can forget her “We are a grandmother’’ – Mr Salmond’s self regard knows no bounds and in the end may put the final nail in his political coffin.
