Safety in the city

The letter arguing against a third runway at Heathrow
(4 September) misses a point that I feel is glaringly obvious, but which is rarely made.

London is one of the few major cities where traffic into and out of its major airport is largely directly over the city
centre.

At times of increasing security (full body-scanners are planned for Edinburgh and Glasgow) to allow so many aircraft over the centre of London would seem to be somewhat silly.

One rogue pilot and one fully laden aircraft – the thought is unimaginable. Bite the bullet, build in the estuary and make life easier, quieter and, more importantly, safer for London – and the rest of us.
