Ryder coup

Unlike Isobel McKendrick (Letters, 3 October) I welcome Alex Salmond, our elected First Minister, representing Scotland in the USA.

As she says, the Ryder Cup is a European/US event.

So far as I know the cup was there before the European Union was and for its purposes Europe is a geographical term rather than a political one.

So whether or not an independent Scotland remains in the EU [as seems probable] Scotland will still be in Europe.

In A Scotsman report Alex Salmond is quoted as saying on the singles day that he “walked the entire 18 holes with Paul Lawrie” (2 October).

Mr Salmond must have walked the last three holes by himself as Lawrie won by five & three with the game ending at the 15th hole.

With regard to Andrew Morton’s remarks (Letters, 3 October) politely criticising Alex Salmond’s apparent lack of inspirational leadership in controlling subcutaneous fat, I feel I have to comment that our First Minister does set a good example in terms of being generally cheery in appearance and upbeat in demeanour.

Perhaps his message is: “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we diet.”
