Rich tax break

Nick Clegg’s plan to raise the income tax threshold by £500 (your report, 18 November) would, as the Liberal Democrat leader says, save £100 a year for someone on the current basic rate of 20 per cent.

However, for someone on the higher rate of 40 per cent (and with income of not more than £100,000 a year) the saving would presumably be £200; that is, the wealthier individual would come off better. It may be, of course, that the taxman has a cunning plan to deal with this.
