Religion in war

When Islamic fighters and terrorists wrap themselves in Koranic verses and explicitly state Islam as their motivation, we are told never to assume they really represent Islam. Yet when a tiny coded Bible reference is found on rifle sights, we fear that it will indicate some sort of Christian crusade against Islam (your report, 21 January).

During the Second World War, the King issued servicemen with a copy of the New Testament prefaced with a personal message. This was entirely appropriate as they were fighting to defeat a system in which the fundamental values of Christianity had been turned on their head.
