Reform is needed

Surely the interesting feature of Peter Riddell’s helpful letter (7 June) was that he as an English unionist recognises that the Union has not been good for Scotland and that the UK is in urgent need of reform. Our Scottish unionists must have choked on their cornflakes to read this admission, which runs so counter to their endless propaganda to the effect that the Union has for 300 years been the absolute best for Scotland, England, the World, indeed, any imaginable world.

If it has been so unreservedly wonderful why is it necessary to attempt to bribe Scots thinking of independence with the last-minute offer of more (doubtless trivial) devolved powers?

The cynicism of the No campaign and the implied contempt for the Scottish public will not soon be forgotten, whatever the result in September.
