Reality check

I was incensed to read about the new Black Watch "tartan with a twist" (your report, 6 January), which makes a mockery of a tartan known throughout the world and affiliated with the famous regiment the Black Watch, which has had a name change to Number Three Scots.

This regiment has had all of its regimental insignia taken away with the exception of the coveted Red Hackle, and to see its famous tartan about to be changed to something resembling a sweetie wrapper defies logic.

This new tartan is akin to the one worn by the Cameron Highlanders, which had red and other stripes running through it and was dubbed the "Bully Beef" tartan, possibly the name that should be affixed to this one.
