Race relations

Bruce Skivington should explain why he sees any connection whatever between racism and “capping immigration, leaving the EU and scrapping foreign aid” (Letters, 14 August). Is he comfortable with the forecast for UK's population rising to 75 million by 2050 (50 per cent more than in 1950)? Is Norway's non-membership of the EU proof of its racism?

An increasing number of respected African economists, businessmen and politicians advocate the ending of “aid” as they argue it has encouraged a dependency culture, and its substitution by fair trade, of which the EU is, in practice, a leading opponent due to its farming and fishing protectionist policies.

In implying that Enoch Powell was a racist (Letters, 14 August) David Fiddimore should surely quote his precise words, in context, from their 1990s “private conversation”.
