In pole position

TO illustrate a story (22 June) a picture was used which shows a three-flag hoist on Calton Hill, with a Saltire, Union Flag then another Saltire. This is wrong.

Before I retired I was responsible for putting a flag hoist up at the firm at which I was employed, consisting of the Saltire, Union Flag and house flag and was threatened with the sack by the works general secretary for putting the Saltire in the centre. I wrote to HM Register House in Edinburgh and was informed that in Scotland no flag takes precedence over the Saltire.

If three flags are to be flown, the correct order should be Union Flag, Saltire then house flag, which includes the flag for the Queen’s Award for Industry. There is no problem with flying the Saltire alone. If a foreign visitor is to call, then the appropriate flag for his country should fly in place of the house flag.
