A place for faith

Steuart Campbell (Letters, 23 February) is right about the niceties of the law on religious observance in schools.

It is indeed required of education authorities that they provide it unless a poll of local electors votes for its discontinuation.

However, the law also allows parents to withdraw their children from religious observance (and religious instruction). Therefore religious observance is not compulsory for the individual.
