Pillar to post

In the act of posting my entry to your Weekend Crossword competition in my nearest pillar box yesterday morning, I happened to read the panel on the front of the box, learning that the last collection on weekdays is now at 9am … and yes, it
really is 9am.

This means that I cannot know whether my crossword entry will be delivered in Edinburgh on Thursday morning unless I send it by first-class post, and this from a pillar box at the entrance to Polmont Station, a mere four miles from a main Post Office in Falkirk.

I wonder how many years have passed since the “service” offered by Royal Mail would require more than 72 weekday hours to deliver a letter to a city address little more than 25 miles from an urban pillar box.
