Photo rules

Tuesday was a glorious autumn day and Regent Terrace contains some suitable deciduous trees to photograph. While standing outside the American Consulate I was told that I could not take photographs of the building.

I asked why, and another man came outside. I asked him the same question and he replied that I was lucky that the guard was not on duty. I am a law-abiding type and I would like to know the legal position.

I was standing on the pavement photographing the Stars and Stripes against a brilliant blue sky. What law was I breaking? I know of no evidence that amateur photographers are involved in terrorism. Now that the “War on Terror” is all but won, maybe we should shift to a “War On Stupid”. We can start with forbidding over-eager staff from turning innocent photographers into “terrorists” or “paedophiles”.
