The need to cut the deficit is an opportunity to revisit the "bus fare concessions" scheme (Business, 24 June).

Stagecoach's boss should reveal to the SNP government how profitable it is carrying pensioners with a subsidy of 76 per cent of a full fare.

There is no additional cost of carrying a pensioner once all the expenses of putting a bus on the road have been met. Surely economic research was conducted before the scheme was introduced to see if pensioners could be carried without the subsidy between 9am and 4pm?
