Not Open to all

Martin Dempster’s article (Sport, 23 July) addresses the drop in attendance issue at the Open at Muirfield well. However, the main reason for the drop is cost, given these difficult financial times.

The £8.50 price of a fish supper is milking it, as is £75 for entry.

In days gone by, a visit to the tented village was a joy for fans as all the suppliers were there demonstrating new equipment. Now all we have is overpriced “Open merchandise”, with a polo shirt costing £100.

However, in light of the row over male-only club membership, if Muirfield wished to embrace the public then it would have been appropriate for a member of our armed forces to carry the Claret Jug onto the 18th green for the presentation. Instead, we got a member of the blazerati to march down with the trophy – chest out like a prize pigeon.
