A new anthem

I would like to suggest to the Scottish Rugby Union and the Scottish Football Association – indeed all Scottish sporting bodies – that, post referendum, they use a different anthem in place of Flower Of Scotland, irrespective of the result of the poll.

In the event of a Yes vote, that anthem will become redundant since the expectations articulated within that fine song will have been realised. Upon a No vote, it will be hugely embarrassing to listen to 50,000-60,000 Scots still intending to “rise now and be a nation again’’ when a great many of them would have had the
opportunity to make this happen but, in sporting parlance,
blew it.
