Mother's milk

I strongly welcome the Baby Milk Action campaign to encourage Nestlé to remove the "Protect" logos from its formula milk labels (your report, 22 June).

Scotland has one of the lowest levels of breastfeeding in the world, at around 20 per cent. Scientific research, which has been carried out by the World Health Organisation, has produced clear evidence that there are significant health benefits associated with breast feeding.

Breast milk protects young infants against a whole host of conditions, such as infections, obesity, inflammatory illnesses and digestive problems.

More must be done to encourage breastfeeding, not discouraging it through aggressive marketing strategies.
